Ranges are published 2026 New Jersey industry figures (tanddtree.com and jhtreeservicenj.com NJ stump guides, treecostremovalcalculator.com), not quotes from this site. Measure the widest point at ground level, including flared roots, and count surface roots you want ground too.
What changes the price
- Access. A standard walk-behind grinder fits through a 36-inch gate; a bigger stump needs a tow-behind machine that needs a driveway or an open yard. Tight side yards in Fort Lee, Cliffside Park and Palisades Park often mean a smaller machine and more time.
- Depth. Standard is 6 to 8 inches below grade, enough for lawn. Ask for 12 inches or more if you plan to pave or plant.
- Roots. Grinding the surface roots of an old maple can double the time.
- Cleanup. Most quotes leave the chips in the hole or raked into a pile; hauling chips and bringing topsoil is extra.
- Utilities. The crew should call 811 (NJ One Call) for marking if the stump is near gas, water or irrigation lines. In Bergen County, gas lines are often shallow in older neighborhoods.
Bundle it with the removal
If you are having a tree taken down, ask for stump grinding on the same quote. The crew is already there, and stand-alone stump trips carry a minimum charge. If you had a tree removed years ago and the stump is still there, several stumps in one visit cost much less per stump than one at a time, so ask a neighbor.
How it works
- Tell us about the job. Your town, what you need, and a photo if you have one. Takes about a minute.
- We match you with a local tree pro. An independent Bergen County tree care company that is registered with the NJ Board of Tree Experts and insured, and that actually serves your town.
- Get a free on-site quote. The company contacts you directly, looks at the tree and gives you a written price. No obligation, and you deal with them from there.
Stump questions
How much does stump grinding cost in NJ?
Most single residential stumps in New Jersey run $100 to $500, priced at roughly $3 to $5 per inch of diameter measured at the ground, with a minimum charge of about $100 to $150 per trip. A 24-inch oak stump is typically around $150 to $250 if the machine can reach it. Several stumps on one visit are cheaper per stump.
Stump grinding or stump removal?
Grinding chews the stump 6 to 12 inches below grade and leaves the roots to rot; it is fast, cheap and what nearly everyone does. Full removal digs out the root ball with an excavator and costs several times more; it is only needed if you are building or putting a pool exactly where the stump is.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
Grass, yes, after you rake out the chips and add topsoil (the chips will sink as they rot, so overfill slightly). A new tree is better planted a few feet away from the old stump because the old roots and the nitrogen-hungry chips make it a poor spot for a year or two.
Do I need a permit to grind a stump?
Not for a stump on your own property in any Bergen town we know of. A stump in the strip between the sidewalk and the curb belongs to the town; call your DPW. Note that many towns' replacement-tree requirements are triggered by the removal of the tree itself, not the stump.
What about the stump of a dead ash?
Grind it like any other. Emerald ash borer lives in the trunk and branches, not the roots, so the stump is not a source of infestation.
