Why Bergen County tree jobs cost what they do
Bergen County is the most populous county in New Jersey and most of it was built out decades ago, so the trees are mature and the lots are tight. A 70-foot oak in Teaneck or Ridgewood is often within a few feet of a house, a neighbor's fence and PSE&G lines. That means climbing or a crane instead of simply felling the tree, a bucket truck that has to park in the street, and wood that gets lowered in pieces. Towns like Paramus, Hackensack and Fair Lawn also require a registered tree service for anything touching a street tree. All of that is labor and equipment, which is why a legitimate quote here is rarely under $500 for anything bigger than an ornamental.

Common questions
How much does tree removal cost in Bergen County, NJ?
Most tree removals in New Jersey run $450 to $3,500, with a typical job landing around $900 to $1,800. A small ornamental under 30 ft can be a few hundred dollars; a large oak or maple over 60 ft near a house, needing a crane or a bucket truck, can run $2,500 or more. Bergen County's tight lots and overhead wires push prices toward the higher end. See our tree removal cost guide.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Bergen County?
Usually yes for larger trees, and it depends on the town. Since 2024 most New Jersey towns have adopted tree removal and replacement ordinances under the state's stormwater rules. Teaneck requires an application for any non-street tree 6" or more in diameter; Hackensack requires notice and replacement trees at the same 6" threshold; Ridgewood permits trees 8" and up; Fort Lee allows one tree every three years without meeting hazard criteria. Street trees (in the strip between sidewalk and curb) belong to the town everywhere. Our town pages summarize each ordinance.
How much does it cost to cut down a 30-foot tree?
A 30 ft tree is on the line between small and medium. In New Jersey, published 2026 ranges put a tree under 30 ft at about $200 to $600 and a 30 to 60 ft tree at $500 to $1,500. Add stump grinding (usually $100 to $500 per stump) if you want the stump gone too.
Is this site a tree company?
No. Bergen Tree Removal is a free matching service. The quote and the work come from an independent New Jersey tree care company that is registered with the NJ Board of Tree Experts and carries liability insurance. New Jersey requires every tree care business to be registered and to employ a Licensed Tree Expert or Licensed Tree Care Operator.
Will my homeowners insurance pay for tree removal?
Only in specific cases. If a tree falls on a covered structure (house, garage, fence), the damage and the removal are usually covered, minus your deductible. If a tree falls in the yard and hits nothing, many policies cap debris removal at about $500 per tree and $1,000 per storm, and a dead tree removed before it falls is normally not covered at all. Check your policy or ask your agent.
When is the best time of year for tree removal in NJ?
Late fall and winter. Trees are dormant, the ground is firm for equipment, there are no leaves to haul, and crews are less busy than in the spring and summer rush, which often means better prices and faster scheduling. Storm season (late summer through October) is the busiest and most expensive time to need a crew.
